22 March 2023

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD) - the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development – held recently a training workshop on the role of the media in spreading the culture of governance, for some journalists and media professionals, which took place within the framework of the "Ambassadors of Governance" initiative.

During her speech opening the training workshop, Dr. Sherifa Sherif, Executive Director of NIGSD, referred to the objectives of implementing effective public governance represented by transparency, accountability, responsiveness to citizens, and law enforcement.

Sherif drew attention to the institute's role in raising awareness and training on how to apply effective governance in various government institutions. She stressed the importance of linking governance with the international goals of sustainable development.

In her presentation, Dr. Sherifa Sherif explained that two pillars form the foundation of the project's strategy. The first is to provide effective government services, through digital transformation as a tool for governance, combating corruption, developing government services, and providing them to citizens easily.

Concerning the second pillar, Sherifa Sherif asserted that it is related to raising the level of the citizen's quality of life, referring to the "Decent Life" and " Takaful and Karama (Solidarity and Dignity) projects.

Sherif explained that governance is one of the tools that enable us to improve the quality of life for citizens through the application of various standards of governance. It is a catalyst and a main tool for achieving the UN SDGs and Egypt's Vision 2030.

The workshop witnessed the presence of Amr Nabil, Director of Corporate Governance at NIGSD. He reviewed the emergence of governance in the private and government sectors and international organizations, in addition to the governance of systems and operations.

He also highlighted different definitions of governance, measurement indicators, and principles, including participation, response, anti-corruption, strategic vision, transparency, efficiency, effectiveness, accountability, rule of law, and equality.
